Autopilot is a subconscious brain function that allows us to complete tasks, think thoughts, daydream, and multi-task, all while not fully conscious.
Before becoming a mother, the concept of an Auto Pilot life was foreign to me. My days were filled with adventure and freedom, always poised to pack my bags and venture into uncharted territories, eager to encounter new places and faces. The thrill of unexpected experiences was my constant companion.
I fondly recall a time when my mother would jest, teasing me with playful remarks like, “You’re like a balloon floating in the air, never tethered to the ground.”
However, my life underwent a significant transformation after welcoming my precious bundle of joy. Despite the remarkable journey of pregnancy, during which I continued to explore and adventure alongside my husband – including a memorable hike along the coast just three months before delivery – nothing quite prepared me for the reality of parenthood. The arrival of our little one marked a pivotal moment, ushering in a new era of love, joy, and challenges. Suddenly, my days were no longer solely mine to chart; they now revolved around the needs and well-being of this tiny, yet all-consuming, presence in our lives.
Six months into my parental leave, I decided to rejoin the workforce and pursue my career in a consulting firm. Little did I anticipate the weight of the challenges that awaited me. Each day became a frenzied rush between the demands of my job and the responsibilities of parenthood, as I navigated the delicate balance between daycare pickups and work commitments.
The situation only intensified when my child fell ill, adding an extra layer of stress to an already overwhelming routine. Day by day, the pressure mounted until one fateful moment when I realized something was seriously amiss.
That particular day, as I wrapped up work and prepared to collect my child from daycare, I was overcome by a wave of inexplicable emotion. Tears streamed down my cheeks uncontrollably, the weight of my responsibilities and the strain of juggling it all finally taking its toll. Sensing my distress, my husband stopped his work to envelop me in a comforting embrace, offering solace and understanding in my moment of vulnerability. Following that emotional episode, I made the courageous decision to seek professional help and began speaking with a psychologist.
Through therapy, I discovered the importance of prioritizing self-care and nurturing my mental health. I came to realize that my well-being isn’t just vital for my own sake but also the harmony and happiness of my family. Day by day, I felt myself growing stronger and more empowered, gradually taking back control of my life and embracing a renewed sense of optimism for the future. Reflecting on my journey, I’ve compiled some essential tips to share with others facing similar challenges:
- Connect with nature: When you’re feeling low, immerse yourself in nature. Take a walk in a nearby park or embark on a hike close to home. Don’t hesitate to pause along the way to jot down or express your feelings. Sometimes, when it feels like no one else can truly understand, nature becomes your trusted confidant. The life force emanating from the natural world can offer a profound source of strength and solace, providing unwavering support during challenging times.
- Shift perspectives: Depression often confines us to narrow thinking patterns, making it difficult to see beyond our current circumstances. Embracing change, such as pursuing a new job opportunity or relocating to a different place, can offer fresh perspectives. While immediate change might not always be feasible, holding onto these ideas and envisioning a future filled with possibilities can provide a guiding light during moments of waiting. Trust in the transformative power of new experiences to broaden your horizons and pave the way for personal growth and fulfillment.
- Savor the Simple Joys: Before you retire for the night, take a moment to reflect on three positive moments from your day. These moments of happiness may seem small, yet they hold immense significance. It could be as simple as enjoying a heartfelt conversation with a friend, discovering a charming cafĂ©, or relishing the beauty of pleasant weather. By consciously recognizing and appreciating these simple joys, we cultivate a mindset of gratitude and find fulfillment in life’s everyday moments.
Today, on International Women’s Day, I made sure to treat myself to some well-deserved pampering. I indulged in a blissful full-body massage, relished the delectable flavors of a Japanese rice bowl, and now find solace by a sunlit window, writing down these thoughts. In these simple yet profound moments of self-care and appreciation, I honor myself and all women, finding joy in the beauty of the present.
Together, let us embrace the journey towards a more empowered life, filled with strength, resilience, and boundless possibilities.
